Graduate Education : The Industrial PhD alternative

The other day I received a comment on my first post regarding graduate education. It read, "one of the points that you have not considered is the Industrial PhD alternative". To be honest, I was taken aback. Being a PhD student myself, I have never heard about this. I decided to do a google search and ended up with a couple of universities that offer such a program. Interesting, I thought. What took me even more by surprise is that the Danish Agency for Science, Technology and Innovation (DASTI, Denmark) has been offering such a scheme for over 40 years. The European Union has formally announced that it would launch what is called European Industrial Doctorate (EID) with an initial funding of 20 million Euro. You can read more about this news here . So what is this Industrial PhD all about .? As defined by the Denmark Agency for Science, Technology and Innovation, it is a business-oriented PhD wherein, the research project is conducted in joint collaboration with an ind...

Graduate Education : the bits and pieces

A recent analysis of current trend of graduate education among freshers shows a sharp increase in the number of students who have set graduate education as their top priority goal. For the sake of clarification, I should explain that freshers refer to bachelors degree holders less than about 5 years experience and graduate education refer to Masters or a PhD course. The analysis is referring to students in the engineering streams. Does this trend indicate youngsters being more interested in developing higher intellect or motivated towards research? Or is there something else that is trending? In my opinion, there are a couple of reasons I can think of, that might explain this increased interest in higher degree courses: Recession / Global Meltdown : It is a time when no one is certain, how long you are going to have your job. The probability that your boss might shut the doors upon you tomorrow morning is more than a mere threat. The only area which hasn't been much af...

Epilogue

There is nothing in this world that won't die... Trees die, animals die, air, water even the earth & sun would die someday. But from these, there is something new that arises. A tree which dies, gives itself into the earth, forming a part of mother earth. It makes the earth more fertile, making it suitable for new trees to come up. When our part of life is done, we must & will go away. But the way we lived, the words we said, will make someone else's life worth living. That is the law of nature. Laura completed what she was destined to do, and she went back. Her death also would've given birth to something new. What it is, we will find out only if we are destined to. There is always that mystery which lies behind, and that is what makes living exciting. It is also what makes death equally challenging for those who are left behind, and those who leave us. Ron came back from Cal, rejuvenated. He lived his life, the way Laura wanted him to.. Ron married, became a fathe...

The New Beginning..!!!

Image
Ron's work at California was relatively easy. He had to interact with the clients and pass on the implementation details to the team back at his workplace. He had been part of the project since the start and could easily translate the client requirements to the implementation team. This made everyone's work easy. However, Ron took a little while to adjust to the conditions in Cal. Accommodation, climate, food, travel, culture, people (a.k.a Jet Lag) - everything was a problem to start with. He had not been out of home for long, never had the necessity to cook his meal or stay alone at a place. Mom and Dad were part of his system. The easier nature of work helped him to get settled in quicker. For the first few days he did not have much time to think about his dreams. He was too pre-occupied with the newer conditions & work. But once he got accustomed, he started thinking more about Laura and his dreams of Cal. He went to all places where he had dreamt of. He went up the Eas...

This too will pass...

Life just passes away. There is nothing permanent in this world. Every thing changes except the law of change. Think over it from your own perspective. You have seen all the changes. You have survived all setbacks, all defeats and all sorrows. All have passed away. The problems in the present, they too will pass away. Because nothing remains forever. Joy and sorrow are the two faces of the same coin. They both will pass away. You are just a witness of change. Experience it, understand it, and enjoy the present moment - this too shall pass! Ron was gradually coming back to normal life. 6 months had passed after the dreadful accident. Ron had recovered from his physical injuries in about a month, but the shock of Laura's death had destroyed his mental balance. He did not give into drugs or drinking or smoking. He didn't believe in slow poisoning. He knew he had to be alive for his parents and to keep Laura's memories alive. He also knew that death was the only way to unite...
